1877-07: Farny’s Caricature of Alfredo Jannotta

A July 20, 1877, article on page 8, column 4, in The Cincinnati Enquirer noted that a caricature by Farny of “Jannotta” had been placed in Wiswell’s window for customers to admire. An Italian immigrant by way of London and Boston, Alfedo Jannotta (1843-1913) had been in Cincinnati for seven years by 1877, overseeing the city’s Cincinnati Choral Society, as well as organizing the city’s first orchestra. Jannotta apparently had a good sense of humor, for he was, based on the July 20th article, amused at Farny’s caricature of him.

I have not yet found the illustration to which the article refers.

NOTE: Alferedo’s son, Alfred Jannotta, became a Rear Admiral in the US Navy, becoming a Navy Cross and Silver Star recipient for bravery during WWII: https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/57468608/alfred_vernon-jannotta
