1877-09: Sketch of Crippled Soldiers Clasping Hands

In September of 1877, the first formal reunion of the Blues and Grays was held in Marietta, Ohio. Invitations went out to former confederate generals to welcome their attendance. President Hayes, along with other dignitaries, attended the event.

Cincinnati dignitaries also attended the event, though part of their motive was to bring a followup reunion to the Cincinnati area. As a part of this effort, as noted in the September 8, 1877, page 1, column 4, issue of The Cincinnati Enquirer, Farny designed a large cartoon with two maimed civil war soldiers shaking hands. I’m a little surprised this image didn’t accompany any coverage of the reports about the reunion, but I’ve yet to find an example of this sketch.
