1875: “Prayer on a Battlefield”

A picture from 1875, readily available on the internet (though there it’s often attributed to 1874), shows Farny, Frank Duveneck, and Frank Dengler in Duveneck’s studio with the painting “Prayer on a Battlefield”, by Duveneck (Farny may or may not have helped). The photograph is first mentioned in a June 7, 1875, Enquirer article that noted the photo making the rounds, so it seems the 1875 date is accurate. The painting was part of a French booth for the May 1875 Cincinnati Exposition. As part of that Exposition, Farny and Duveneck, along with Edward Goepper, were dressed in French costumes. Farny was responsible for the decorations at other booths that year also.
