Following the demise of Ye-Giglampz, one of Farny’s next efforts was to illustrate a cartoon for Alphonso Miner Griswold’s Cincinnati Saturday Night.
Griswold began his career writer under the “nom de plume of ‘The Fat Contributor.’ His humor was racy and original, and he was classed among the leading fun makers of the day.” He moved to Cincinnati in 1863, working for the “Cincinnati Evening Times”, until launching the Cincinnati Saturday Night in 1872, which proved successful. (See 1882 Famous Funny Fellows by William M. Clemmons, pgs. 113-116).. Note, one can’t help wonder if National Lampoon’s “Griswold” family was named after A. Miner Griswold; it seems a high possibility.
It’s not clear how many times Farny illustrated for Griswold, but I could only find references in newspapers for the early September 5th illustration and a claim that Farny would be illustrating for the following issue on September 12.
It would seem that Farny and Griswold’s paper would have been a good fit, but I never found any digitized copies of the Griswold’s paper to see if any other cartoons by Farny were published.
