1874-11: Herman Schilling Murder

The November 09, 1874, issue of the Cincinnati Enquirer posted a front page article about the murder and cremation of Herman Schilling. Lafcadio Hearn, Farny’s former business partner just two months earlier in Ye Giglampz, reported on the grisly scene. Accompanying him was both Farny and Frank Duveneck, who each contributed sketches to Hearn’s article.

It’s rare to find Farny or Duveneck sketches made especially a news article, let alone having them both appear together. Here are Farny’s sketches, which include images of Fred Egner, George Rufer, and the murder scene:

Here’s what appears to be a sketch of Andreas Egner by Duveneck (note the F/D overlaid signature):

It appears even an illustration by Hearne was included, though for some reason he spelled his name with an “e” at the end.
