On June 21, 1874, Farny teamed with reporter/writer Lafcadio Hearn to produce a new magazine. Ye Giglampz, a weekly devoted to “art, literature and satire,” The name was a play in German on the large eye-spectacle that Hearn wore.
Over the summer of 1874, the pair published 8 issues. A disagreement between Farny and Hearn led to Farny buying out Hearn, per the August 03, 1874, issue of the Cincinnati Daily Gazette, pg8, col1, and producing final issue #9 on Farny’s own.
The Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library has a copy of every issue, along with a letter from Daniel Farny, Henry Farny’s son with Farny’s wife Ann, explaining why the pair broke up their business. The pair must not have ended on too bad of terms, as a few months later they visited a crime scene together.
Below you’ll find the cover pages from all nine issues. You can view additional Farny-drawn images within the magazine’s pages: Ye Giglampz @ The Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library.
