Edited by John James Platt, the initial volume of The Hesperian Tree acts as a platform for well-known Ohio Valley persons to contribute specially written content. Farny contributed the story “Sorrel Horse’s Medicine, A Yarn of the Buffalo Range”, which appears on pages 116-119. He also the original illustration of the title page, along with “Long Day’s End”, on page 41, and “In the Old Hunting Ground”, page 379, an original, more detailed, sketch of which is owned by David Eilers.
