1875-09: “Kenny’s Illustrated” Sketches

A September 25th, 1875, advertisement in the Cincinnati Daily Enquirer, page 5, announced that D.J. Kenny’s Illustrated Cincinnati was available for purchase. The book contained over three hundred sketches, almost half from Cincinnati area artists. Farny is credited with the images that appear in the “Over the Rhine” section of the book, pages 129-136.

D.J. Kenny’s book was apparently based on similar type of European books. It sure would have been a handy travel book! An August 31, 1875, article in the Cincinnati Daily Gazette highlighted some additional details:

The images appear on the following pages.

Pg130: Over-the-Rhine Canal (though no Farny signature)
Pg133: Weilerts Saloon
Pg134: The Transrhenane Waiter
Pg135: The Sausage Man
Pg135: The Wiener Wurst Man
