UPDATE: For the 9th annual Cincinnati Exposition in 1879, Farny entered another painting titled “Serpent”, winning another silver medal. Was this the same painting? There isn’t enough description in the September 10, 1879, Cincinnati Enquirer, page 9, article to be sure.
Original Post: In the autumn of 1871 Cincinnati held its 2nd annual Industrial Exposition at which Henry Farny displayed a silver-medal-winning oil painting titled “Serpent”, according to the October 3rd, 1871, The Cincinnati Enquirer, page 4, column 5. This winning artwork was also featured at Wiswell’s Store, (Greg hand discusses more about Wiswell’s store on Tumbler).
Accompanying the window display of the “Serpent” were a series of satirical caricatures by Farny, one of which included a satirical look at his own oil painting.
