The book Howling Wolf and His Trick-Pony, by Mrs. LIzzie W. Champney, was released in 1886, though I could only find an 1888 version for our purposes. 1886 ads like this for the book noted that the book was “Illustrated by H. F. Farny, and from photographs”. In fact, I could only identify one picture of Farny’s in the book, with many of the rest of the illustrations created by F. T. Merrill, a long time illustrator most famous for his work in Louisa May Wolcott’s 1880 book, Little Women.
There is also a serialized story With Howling Wolf in Wide Awake Magazine in 1886, and while some the pics are the same, the actual text is different, so I’m not sure how the serialized story connects with the book?
