In 1879, Harper’s Weekly introduced a magazine focused on young people called Harper’s Young People. By that year, there are a number of rivals targeting youthful readers. One example to which Farny contributed illustrations was St. Nicholas Magazine, a magazine published by Scribners.
Beginning in August of 1885, illustrations by Farny accompanied a story by William Stoddard called Two Arrows: A Story of Red and White. Almost weekly, one or more chapters would be published, with one or two images. The story ended with chapter 30 in the January 19, 1886, issue.























Of particular interest is the third to the last image, published January 05, 1886, with the Indian’s hand raised, signaling peace. Note the slanted background as well. A few years later, this Farny re-used this theme for a painting called Peace Be With You
