1886: Cowboy and An “Old-Timer”

In 1886, Farny completed two paintings which may have been companion pieces. One is called ‘An” Old-Timer”‘, currently located at the Blanton Museum, and the other is titled “Cowboy”, which was last auctioned in 2012. As part of the information related to the auction, the “Cowboy” was suggested to be a self-portrait, but I personally don’t see any evidence for that.

These two images look enough alike to possibly have been companions pieces of some type, perhaps for a book or for some other purpose. However, the “An Old Timer” is Gouache, while the other is watercolor, ink and pencil, so that is a strike against them being companion pieces.

An “Old-Timer” is on the left and the “Cowboy” is on the right.
