1889: Red Mustang Illustrations

On September 17, 1889, Harper’s Young Magazine began publishing a Serialize story by William Stoddard called Red Mustang, A Story of the Mexican Border. Farny illustrated one image per magazine installment, for a total of eighteen images, with the series running through January 21, 1890.

One noticeable difference between these illustrations and later Farny paintings is the action. Of course, the story likely drove some of the images below, but it is interesting to look at the first picture, for example, and wonder why Farny might not have turned that into a painting. Compare that to picture number seven showing the Arizona geography, which he would turn into a painting in 1890 and scenery he would reuse in a couple other paintings.

As with some of the other serialized stories Farny illustrated, Red Mustang would be quickly turned into a book that included Farny’s work.
