1895: The Native Races of North America

William Henry Withrow’s book The Native Races of North America was published in 1895 and included two images by Farny. However, both images had been previous used thirteen years earlier in an 1882 short story by Edmund A. Struthers called Coasting on Lake Winnipeg.

The image on page 60 captioned “Camping Out in the Snow in the North-west” was previously labeled “The Camp at Night”, though only a portion of the illustration was used in the Native Races book.

The image of Page 62, captioned “War Dance in the Sky”, had previously been labeled “The Indian Legend of the Aurora”. The 1895 iteration, besides the updated caption, also included a short description: The Indians imagine that they can see in the Northern Lights warlike figures dancing in the sky.
