James R. Murray, a Chicago transplant who left the city after the Great Fire, chose Cincinnati as his landing place. How long he knew Farny is not clear, but Murray chose Farny to illustrate his 1883 Dairy Ballad, “Oh, Go Away”. The review below suggests it might have been a tricky song, requiring a gifted story teller to really make it “interesting and effective”.
I have been unable to locate the picture described. But, you’ll likely know Murray better for his 1887 rendition of the classic Christmas song, “Away in a Manger“.
